Monday August 6

Yesterday afternoon we made a quick drop in at the neighbors house across the street for her 40th birthday before leaving to pick up Paul and Mary for a Costco run. We got home around 7, unloaded the food, and came upstairs to find the phone light blinking there was a message. I was pretty sure I knew what it was going to be because dad had not been acting himself the last few days.

He was not great when I had the out Thursday. Saturday when I talked to Frances she said he had very little energy Friday night when they went out to dinner. Sure enough, Al had left a message to call my parents house to let me know dad had taken a fall in the yard. He was not hurt. His legs more or less gave out on him and he just sat down in the grass but there is no way mom can get him up.

By the time I got the message they had already called 911 and were at the hospital emergency room. After calling the house, Frances’ cell, and their house I finally tracked them down via Al on his cell. I grabbed purse and book and headed for the hospital.

They were getting his settled in the OR when I arrived in the waiting room. Mom came out to let us know they were giving him fluids andĀ antibiotics. His fever was 102 and he was dehydrated. Once we knew it would be awhile before we knew more I sent them home to eat dinner. Around 9pm I went back to see how things were progressing. Dad was sleeping but the doctor showed up to give me an update.

Bottom line he has pneumonia, a UTI and a bladder infection. They wanted to keep him over night because of his age and his oxygen levels and eletrolytes were down. I called Frances to give them a heads up that he would be admitted. Frances and mom came back to the hospital while Al stayed home cleaning up from dinner and getting the guest room ready for mom.

It was close to midnight by they time they got him into a room. I guess I got home around 12:15 or so but had a hard time getting to sleep. I doubt I had more than a three or four hours of sleep before it was time to get up for work.

I headed to work giving everyone a heads up I may need to leave during the day. Al was in town which made it easy on me getting mom back and forth to the hospital but I was not sure if would have to go over or not depending on how things went. I talked to dad twice on the phone this afternoon. The second time I called I happen to catch the doctor on a visit to get an update from him. He said dad was doing much better. His fever was down, his oxygen levels were up and he might get to home tomorrow depending on how he is in the morning.

I told dad I would not go by the hospital since it appeared he was doing well and being well cared for. I came home, fixed dinner, walked Colin, and will be in be early tonight to get some sleep. Tomorrow is another day.
