We had an interesting weather day. Over night it rained, this morning it was cloudy, cold, and windy. Bonnie and I walked uptown for lunch. She said snow flakes were flying around while she was out running errands earlier. This afternoon we had more spotty snow flurries, cold, and windy. Now the sun is shinning but it is still chilly with wind.

Yesterday afternoon we watched a DVD movie I asked Bob to order for me last month, Away To Me. I am not sure where I came across it’s existence, but, since it was about Border Collies I wanted to see it. The movie is about working BC’s on several different farms, two in the US and one in Canada and the three handlers who also enter them in sheep dog trials. I attended a number of these events around NC and VA when I was doing Border Collie rescue. I always enjoy watching the dogs work even though I had no interest in learning and training my dogs. Both Duncan and Malcolm had a chance to get into a pen with sheep several times since I was friends with several working sheep farmers during my rescue days. They both were born with and exhibited the natural instincts for working the sheep though not trained in doing it correctly. That does not necessarily mean they would have been good sheep dogs. Even with the instinct some dogs were just do not have that ability.

I will never forget my friend Laura who at that time also owned two BC’s. She put both hers in a pen with sheep and both of them sat down and looked at her as if to say “you want me to do something here?” Her dogs had not herding instinct at all.
