Saturday July 28

Bob called me yesterday afternoon around 4:30 to let me know the power was out. Since we have no phone when we have no power he had walked down to the neighbor’s house to use their cell phone. Funny thing is, Bob had purchased a cell phone for himself for just this reason but I have been carrying it with me since dad fell because my cell phone had been acting up.

Apparently the storm that roared through Winston yesterday afternoon wrecked havoc just in our area knocking down a 200 plus year old tree along with a lot of others in our neighborhood along with dumping about 1 1/2 inches of rain. The original Duke Power estimate had been 7:30 Friday evening but I came on home from work to see if perhaps the power had been restored sooner as sometimes happens. As soon as I got close to where I turn from Reynolda into our neighborhood I could see the beginnings of the storm damage. Trees and limbs down in yards and debris all over the road. Fortunately for us we just had a lot of big limbs down.

The power was still off when I got home so I changed and drove out to where they had not had damage to pick up something for dinner. OF course the house was very warm, about 80 degrees up here. We went downstairs to the finished area to sit and read where it was a pleasant 69 degrees.

7:30 came and went, still no power. Bob called the Duke Power again around 8 and they gave a “we have no idea message”. So, we sat downstairs reading. By 11 things were still dark. Bob decided he would be more comfortable upstairs in the heat stretched out on the bed rather than on the couch downstairs. It makes into a bed but with all the kit stuff sitting around on the floor it was too much to move to make room to pull it out. I moved from the love seat to the couch and eventually fell sleep. The power came back on at 1:20 waking me up when the light in the stairway came on and came on up to bed. The house cooled off pretty quickly.

This morning we had power but still not cable, no phone, no internet. I took the Trooper over to the Valvoline service center to get the oil changed and inspected then ran a couple of other errands. This afternoon we watched the last three episodes of Downtown Abbey while we worked on kit stuff. The phone and cable finally came on at 4:30.
