Al and Frances left for Winston this afternoon. It has been a nasty day with cool temperatures and a steady rain for most of the day. JoAnne and Jeff came by to pick up the canning jars, caner, and dehydrator and the two solar panels I will not be needing. Al did some more household type chores for me.

It’s a cool, drizzly day in Sparta. Bob had a shelf in the food room for all his prepping stuff. That was his domain and I basically left it to him to stack and store all his prep stuff. That translates into…I have not idea what was down there. Frances and Al helped me go through all that stuff this morning and sort it. I will keep most of it but needed to see what was in bins and boxes.

We then moved to the lab. I needed to so some cleaning up in there, which I kept that area organized anyway. Bob had bins for the forensic kits up high since we did not sell many of those. Al helped me move those to some lower shelve so I would not have to climb the ladder everything to grab a bin. While we are out of a few chemicals for the chemistry kit I am looking to see if I have all the chemicals in stock for the biology and forensic. If so, I can build a few of those at a time.

I am reading Hard Truth by Nevada Barr.

Frances and Al arrived late this morning. I had a load of stuff ready to go to Alleghany Cares in Al’s pickup truck. He also helped me get some stuff up to the attic.

I want to thank everyone for support on my diary page. What a wonderful group of people out there in cyber land.

As you all know, Bob handled all the tech stuff. Of course, this week while Al was up here we started having connection issues. For the two years we’ve lived up here our provider has had very few problems on their end. We had some issues for a while getting things set up when we moved in but between Bob and SkyBest things have been running fine.

I gave Al the number Monday to call them to make sure they were not having problems. Yesterday afternoon, back here in town, I called them to see what I needed to do to change the contact info and report the problem. We did manage to get the D-Link TV router reconnected to the TV but the red light was still on. I had no problem with the internet connection but Al could not connect to our Wifi.

This morning I went to the gym then stopped by SkyBest. Once she changed everything she called the tech folks for me, explained the situation, and said someone would be out. Sure enough Justin showed up at 11:20. He has been here before when we had a problem. He looked things over, did a few things, then unplugged the D-Link connector box from the outlet and plugged it back in. HA! TV and Wifi now reconnected. Now I know how to handle that problem.

I prepared three kits to go out. It’s sunny today and 42 but windy. I could not stand the dried salt on the car any longer and went out to wash the car. I have a load of laundry to fold and some more phone calls to make.

Staying busy keeps me going.

We had a very nice drop in visitation at Frances and Al’s yesterday from 2-6. Two of Bob’s cyber friends came, one from W-S and other a five hour drive from Knoxville, TN. A total of 19 people showed up during the afternoon. I had to bounce around talking to folks but everyone who came stayed for several hours and visited among themselves.

I drove back up to Sparta this morning. As many of you know Bob was a big time preparedness advocate. We moved it all up here from Winston then Bob bought more. Some of the canned goods are reaching the three year old mark, which are still good and would be for several more years. I know Bob prepared not only for us but to take care of friends and relatives. The dry goods we repackaged I can use but all those the canned goods was so much more than I can see keeping even for an emergency as they continue to age. I kept the canned foods I would use as well as  the LDS dry goods like flour, sugar, rice, etc.. The rest Al and I hauled two loads off to the local food bank today. I will do some restocking in case of emergencies but buy more of the things I will eat and  use. As I see it, in case of an emergency of that type, the food bank would need to feed people as well. There are a lot of people in this county that need food assistance. We have one more load to haul off next week. I donated the food in Bob’s honor.

Bob passed away last night around 9pm at the rehab center. I posted yesterday that he was talking better but still coughing up a lot junk. The nurse suctioned him last night and asked him if everything was okay. He nodded yes. She went back in a few minutes later and he had stopped breathing. EMS came and did all they could but he was just too weak to survive another another code. I knew in the back of my mind his lungs were not going to recover after battling those issues for 6 weeks but there was always hope until the very end.

Al came up this morning at 1am to cover the home front. I came up later this morning after meeting with the funeral home. Thee will not be a service. Frances and Al are hosting an open house for our local friends to stop by in a more relaxed atmosphere than the funeral home. I am heading back to Winston this afternoon.

Needless to say I am devastated. I lost my best friend for 34 years. Hayworth Miller will be posting his obituary sometime later today or tomorrow. RIP my love.

Warm, sunny, and windy today. I left for Winston around 9:30. The roads were fine all the way down. Bob was having a fairly good day. His speaking at most times was strong and understandable. Still coughing up a lot of junk. The respiratory therapist said she was seeing some improvement with that.

I went to the gym this morning. We live just off one of the main roads going in and out of Sparta. The route to the gym, not far from downtown and our house, is also main roads until the turn onto the road to the gym. Everything was clear and dry by the time I left at 8:45.

I decided not to go down to Winston today for several reasons. Once I left the area I was not sure how the roads would be down the mountain between here and Elkin.  Also, with the big thaw starting there will be a lot of traffic on the major highways, particularly truck traffic playing catch up on deliveries, and regular traffic for folks suffering from cabin fever.

Most of the snow is melted or blown off the lawn except in the low spots where it’s still a couple of inches deep. I gave Colin a good playtime this morning and he will get a couple of more this afternoon since it’s a nice day otherwise with temps in the mid 40’s and 10 to 15 mph winds.

Thursday January 18, 2018

The winds started howling last night and continued into mid-day today. This morning when I took Colin out it was 12 degrees with 20 to 30 mph winds gusting over 50 making it anywhere from -5 to -15 degrees. As expected I had snow dunes on the driveway. About two inches by the garage door but this time about a ten inch one right in the middle of the drive. I waited until this afternoon when the winds died down a little to shovel those back off.

The sun is out and the temperatures have made it up to 32. Tonight is to be cold so whatever melts on the roads will be a mess in the morning.

Wednesday January 17, 2018

We woke up to about an inch of snow on the ground and still falling. The original amounts for us was 1 to 3 but it looks like we might get at least 3 to 4 by the time all is said and done. From the radar it looks like it will all be out of here later this afternoon. Cold tonight with a low of 10 degrees but 40 mph wind gusts. I will shovel off the drive this afternoon to keep the snow from pilling up at the garage doors.

Colin has been out a couple of times to play in the snow. I pulled out a jigsaw puzzle of NC lighthouses and friend gave me for Christmas to work on.
