Mostly sunny this morning with temperatures in the upper 60’s. I volunteered at the bookstore this morning. Dark clouds started moving in downtown just as it was time for me to get off. On the way home I hit off and on down pours. Thunderstorms with heavy rain this afternoon. I just barely had time to get Colin out before it started pouring rain again.

I am reading Red Right Returning by Charles B. McLane from my To-Be-Read shelf. I picked this book up on a bus trip to Maine 12 years ago. I often bought regional books when I traveled then put them on the shelf until the mood strikes me to read them. This one is a fictitious account of life on an Island off the coast of Maine just after WWII. The author tells the story  how the families live on the island, including of course, what is is like to be a lobster fisherman during that time period.

This morning Lou and Joyce came by to look at the books in our photography collection from back when Bob and I were first married and he was into that as a hobby. Lou took some for himself and some to donate to another cause. Joyce picked out the ones we could sell at the bookstore.

On the way to the gym to work my shift I dropped off the ones for the bookstore along with another stack of books from our astronomy collection. No need for this stuff to sit on the shelves unused when other folks can enjoy and or benefit from them.

I went down to Winston this morning to help Al and Frances with some outdoor projects and for a visit. Frances fixed a light lunch then I headed back up the mountain. It was warm down there but we had a good breeze. Of course, the temperatures up here tend to run about 10 degrees cooler.

I harvested a zucchini from the garden yesterday that I fixed for dinner last night. This morning I dug up two hills of potatoes to take down to Winston.

67 degrees, sunny, and calm this morning. I worked on outdoor chores this morning. It was warm in the sun but temperatures were cool with an occasional breeze. Then I did the laundry for the week.

This afternoon I drove over to Donna’s house, about three miles or so from here, to see her baby goats and bunnies. She also has ducks, 4 indoor little dogs, and an outdoor beagle that adopted them. They live at the end of a short gravel road on 15 acres.

I am reading A Vineyard Killing by Philip R. Craig.

67 degrees, sunny, and calm when I left for the gym this morning. Clouds off and on again today but no rain with mild temperatures and low humidity. Lovely weather for the end of July.

I worked at the gym again today. We are short staffed right now which means I may be picking up an extra day a week for awhile.

I did my grocery store run this morning then back to the gym to work my midday shift. It’s a beautiful day with blue skies and temperatures in the upper 70’s.

61 degrees and raining this morning.

I’ve had a little over two inches of rain since yesterday afternoon. I volunteered at the bookstore this morning. Temperature in the mid 60’s today with rain. Low in the 50’s tonight. We needed the rain.

71 degrees, cloudy, and calm when I left for the gym this morning.

Joyce picked me up at 10 to spend another day on the Parkway picking up trash and working on mile markers. It’s amazing the beautiful things you notice when you are cruising at a slow speed looking for trash. Tiny, colored mushrooms, lovely areas of land back off the road covered in ferns and other lush greenery, cute little brooks, etc.

We covered several miles due to there being long stretches where we did not have to stop to pick up a lot of trash. Storms, some heavy at times, were predicted for this afternoon and tonight. While we heard an occasional rumble of thunder the heavy rain held off until about 2:15 when we were close to stopping for the day anyway.

It had rained about half an inch here and is thundering.

Sunday July 21, 2019

I am reading A Cotswold Killing by Rebecca Tope.

78 degrees, sunny, and humid.

I switched up chores this morning deciding to weed the garden and the beds along the driveway first while it was still relatively cool. It was still hot in the sun with the humidity in the 70’s but there was an occasional breeze.

Both yellow squash plants died almost over night. The zucchini is still hanging in there. I dug up one hill of potatoes to see how those are doing. I harvested about five or six small ones. Although the bean plants are still small they do have flowers on them. If we do not get rain this afternoon I need to water.

I vacuumed and cleaned the bathrooms. While the towels washed I spent time getting paperwork and other stuff caught up at my desk.

I’m pretty sure I have another raccoon. I don’t feel like messing with catching it. I’ve been covering the post feeder with a black plastic trash bag for several nights. Night before last the pole feeder was cleaned out. Last night I covered it with two old dog raincoats I found. One tied to the pole and covering half the feeder, the other one covering the other half of the feeder. It was still covered this morning.
